About: “Great” Long Pond (to distinguish it from “Little” Long Pond, also on MDI) is the largest lake on Mt. Desert Island. 2/3 of the pond is located within Acadia National Park, with Bernard, Mansell, and Beech Mountains rising up along either side of the basin. The north end of Long Pond is used for swimming, fishing, and boating. Be very aware of swimmers, who can be difficult to see in the water. Please respect the wildlife (look for nesting loons!) and human residents who live at the pond. Also, stay aware of all other activities while rowing. Scullers: look around every few strokes when rowing in northern finger of the rowing area. See Also: schematic just below.
